Please help. Swollen glands in my dog?

Lovemypuggle asked:

I took my dog with me for a trip to Pennsylvania. We stayed at a pet friendly hotel, which was right next door to a vet’s office, and we went for a quick walk on a nature trail. He is on Revolution, which is a flea/tick preventative and has had rabies, distemper and parvo vaccinations. He will be 7 years old in October.

When we got back last Saturday I noticed my dog’s lymph nodes (or they might be salivary glands) on his neck were slightly swollen. I made an appointment with the vet for Monday. When I took him in, they were very swollen. The vet did bloodwork and took fluid from the swollen glands to check for cancer.

The results came back perfectly normal. Bloodwork fine – everything indicated he was perfectly healthy. White blood cell count was perfect. No cancer either, just saliva was in the glands, so it’s probably the salivary glands that are swollen. He has no fever, no diarrhea, he’s eating/drinking normal, no coughing/sneezing.

The vet doesn’t know exactly what’s wrong with him – he prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds to decrease swelling/fight infection.

Now he is very tired all time (it’s his third day on the meds) he just wants to sleep all day and doesn’t even walk around the backyard like he usually does. I can tell he is not feeling good.

I am very worried about him. What could this be? Could he have caught something from a sick dog that stayed at the hotel? Could he have gotten something from the lawn of the vet’s office when he was smelling it? If he had an infection, why didn’t it show up in his blood test (white blood cell count)?

Any information will be very, very appreciated.
The meds are not helping too much- they may have decreased swelling very, very slightly, but they are still swollen. Also, could the meds be making him so tired?

I can’t offer advice on this as it is too indepth, but I certainly would go back to the vets and can undertand why you are worried.

Do sincerely hope they find a cause and sort him out.

Don’t forget the thryoid gland is in more or less the same place as well, and a groiter will make the glands swell.

Sounds like he is actually trying to fight off infection doesn’t it.

Best of luck.

The antibiotics could be making him tired. I know they do people. Please call your vet, describe what happened and see what they say.

the meds could be making him tired however when my doberman has swollen glands the vet said the only way of detecting cancer would be to take a sample of the gland as certain cancers dont show up in blood. it could be a problem elsewhere in his body and the glands are swollen because of this and if it is a problem in another area of his body the cells from it will show up in the lymph glands. unfortunately they seem to eat and drink normally even although thay have a problem and that kind of throws you a bit. take your dog to one that can specialise in that area or to a vet school which i think are the best. god bless.

The best advice which I can give to you is to take your dog to a veterinarian’s office and see what they can do about his matter.

Good Luck To You!
